The Supreme Court recently issued notice on the IGP, the Attorney General and the Director CID to be present before Court on July 09.

The notice is pertaining to the alleged illegal detention of Selva Kanthi, a Tamil woman aged 36, at a Tangalle detention camp. The CID arrested her in Batticaloa.

She had been arrested on January 28, 2021, and not produced before a Court of Law. President’s Counsel Razeek Zarook told the Supreme Court that her relatives and not even lawyers had been allowed to see her. The detainee had not been given medicine and adequate food. Reason for her arrest had not been revealed, he said.

Counsel Zarook requested the Supreme Court to order the police and the CID to release the women from unlawful detention.

The bench comprised Justice Priyantha Jayawardene, Justice Yasantha Kodagoda and Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz.
