Deserter, Sergeant arrested over theft of T-56, ammo

Police have arrested an army deserter over the recent theft of a T-56 assault rifle from a sentry point at the Panagoda Army Cantonment. Police have taken into custody an Army Sergeant.Police headquarters said that the deserter was a resident of Middeniya and the Sergeant was from Veyangoda.

Homagama police received a complaint from the Army in this regard following the removal of the assault rifle along with 90 rounds of T-56 ammunition in three magazines.

Police arrested the two suspects near the Magammana cemetery, Homagama on Wednesday (15).Police said that the stolen weapon and ammunition had been recovered and investigations are being conducted. (SF)
