Decision to add 10 more Sri Lankan sites to World Heritage List
The Ministry of Cultural Affairs has reached a decision to include 10 more sites in Sri Lanka in the World Heritage List.Director General of the Central Cultural Fund Prof. Gamini Ranasinghe said the proposals will be submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
The list of sites to be nominated includes Buddhist meditation monasteries of ancient Sri Lanka, Mihintale, ancient irrigation systems, ancient maritime centres of Sri Lanka and the tea landscape.
The architecture of tropical modernism, oratorian churches, Mahayanist influenced monastic complexes, prehistoric cave habitation sites and Buddhist mural sites of late 19th century maritime region are also among the list of sites to be nominated.
There are eight world heritage sites in Sri Lanka at present.
