Death toll due to adverse weather climbs to 21

The prevailing inclement weather had claimed 21 lives by yesterday, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.
DMC Assistant Director, Pradeep Kodippili yesterday told The Island that the 21 deaths were reported from five districts.
Kurunegala had two deaths, Kegalla five, Kalutara three, Puttalam two, Colombo one, Ratnapura three, Galle one and Gampaha four.
Nearly 272,132 people from 43,890 families have been affected in 10 districts, according to the DMC.
Gampaha, Ratnapura, Colombo, Puttalam, Kalutara, Nuwara Eliya, Kegalla, Kandy, Kurunegala and Galle districts have been badly affected.
Moreover, five people were injured and two people were missing, the DMC said.
Twenty-one houses were damaged completely while 1,095 houses suffered partial damages, they said.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at a few places in Uva, Eastern and Northern provinces during the evening or night today. Fairly heavy falls of about 75 mm can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa province and in Galle, Matara, Nuwara-Eliya and Kandy districts.
