De Mazenod fight back to clinch maiden Under 17 Division I cricket title
Paceman Savinu Chanthula picked up three wickets and Dinosh Jelon removed the batting openers cheaply as De Mazenod made a remarkable comeback after being bowled out for 124 runs to win their maiden title in the Under 17 Division I cricket tournament at the ACE Capital ground in Colombo on Sunday.
In reply to De Mazenod’s 124 runs, Prince of Wales were bowled out for 73 runs as Chanthula, Jelon, Dinidu Sasmitha and Kaveen Nethmina shared bowling honours to dismiss their opponents within 20 overs.
Oshan Maneesha with 22-ball 24 runs and Pasan Cooray 13 runs in 15 balls were the only Cambrians to reach double figures against De Mazenod.
Earlier put to bat De Mazenod faced similar circumstances as middle order failed to capitalize on a strong opening stand put on by skipper Janith Karindra and Kaveen Nethmina. Karindra and Nethmina put on 58 runs for the first wicket. At one stage De Mazenod were 80 for one wicket but they lost their last eight wickets for the addition of just 44 runs.
Apart from openers, Savinu Chanthula was the only batsman to reach double figures. Skipper Prince Fernando and Suwas Ranawana picked up three wickets each. It was the first time De Mazenod reached a Division I final while the Cambrians reached the final after 18 years.
