Damsara, Hirun shine on day one at Battle of the Saints

Sri Lanka Under 19 cap Hirun Kapurubandara scored an unbeaten half century for St. Joseph’s to reach 91 for one wicket at stumps after Dilana Damsara contributed with a century for St. Peter’s to post 270 on day one of the 90th Battle of the SaintsBig Match at the SSC ground on Friday.

Kapurubandara stroked four fours and three sixes in his entertaining knock. He was unbeaten on 53 runs (in 61 balls) when the match was stooped for bad light with more than 20 overs remaining on day one.

Earlier put to bat, openers Oween Salgado and Dilana Damsara put up a solid stand of 108 runs for the first wicket for Petes. While Salgado made 46 runs inclusive of seven fours (79 balls), Damsara anchored the bating line up with a century. His 103 runs came in 150 balls and included eight fours and four sixes.

Nathan David (35) and Ishira Ayupala (21) were the only other batsman to make contributions of note before their quota of 60 overs expired.  Spinner Yenula Dewthusa, who picked up four wickets was the pick of the bowlers for St. Joseph’s, while Manasa Madubashana accounted for three wickets. (RF)
