By Rathindra Kuruwita
There have been 485 incidents of gas explosion in Sri Lanka between 01 January and 05 December, 2021 the committee appointed to investigate incidents related to domestic gas cylinders has said.
Out of the explosions, 430 were reported between 29 November and 05 December, the committee has added.
Out of the 458 complaints, 244 have been about gas leaks. The Committee has also warned people to refrain from trying to test gas cylinders for leaks.
State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna said that the consensus among experts was that the change in the composition of LP gas was the reason for explosions.
There were 4,000 metric tonnes of such gas with Litro and they would be sent to tile manufacturing companies, he said.
“We have also asked Litro to provide us with a list of companies that the volatile gas will be given,” he said.
