Customs arrest five trying to smuggle gold

Officers attached to Sri Lanka Customs on Tuesday arrested five individuals trying to smuggle out 5.65 kilos of gold at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

Customs Spokesperson Sudattha Silva told journalists that the arrests had been made following a tip-off.

The five suspects were already onboard a flight bound for Chennai along with the smuggled gold when the arrests were made.

The suspects have been identified as businessmen from the Colombo area.

The gold is estimated to be worth over Rs 107 million.

Further investigations are being carried out by Sri Lanka Customs. (RK)
