Cop arrested for beating woman over private dispute

Wattala police took into custody a police sergeant attached to the Cinnamon Gardens police for handcuffing and beating a woman in public over a private dispute on Saturday.

The suspect would be produced before the courts, police said.

Investigators said they had examined a CCTV footage of the sergeant dragging a handcuffed woman along the Negombo road and assaulting her in full view of the public before handing her over to the Wattala Police Station.

The investigators said that the suspect had first assaulted the woman at a private leasing institution in Wattala town around 11 am before handcuffing and dragging her out.
