Community police committees totalling 14,022 had been established in all Grama Niladari divisions in the country, and they had been asked to inform the police of those who visited their areas, Acting IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon told journalists in Colombo yesterday (18).

Forms had been issued in all three languages for that purpose, he said.

“If a new person visits a village, the committee must report his or her arrival to the police. If someone is leaving the village, that too should be brought to the notice of the police.

Tennakoon said that from 22 January, the police would start cracking down on road rule violations in the city of Colombo. Some time before, a CCTV system had been established in Colombo, but the police had not taken advantage of it, he said.
