Colonial Genocide Monument in Brampton, Canada

Published

Mayor Patrick Brown of Brampton, Canada, in a recent very emotional statement carried in The Island of (27th January 2021) stated that, “Where they tear down a statue, they tear down history, but we would do the opposite in Canada. We would build a monument to remember the victims, to remember the Genocide” end quote. Mayor Brown has got the countries confused or something in a twist.

What he probably meant was the great urgency and need to build a monument to remember the 524 years of colonial genocide perpetrated on the 634 recognised First Nations who lived south of the Arctic Coast. Since the arrival of the white settlers, 90 – 95 % of the indigenous peoples have been subjected to genocide, and even today four out of five especially indigenous women, are subjected to violence, disappearance and even murder. It is probable that some ancestors may have participated as well.

Mayor Brown should be congratulated on his initiative, that at last, the genocide of 90 – 95 % of the indigenous people, representing the First Nations, will be recognised in a monument to be built in Brampton, begging forgiveness for the annihilation and genocide perpetrated on the First Nations in Canada, by white immigrant perpetrators. Or is it just an election gimmick?
