A large number of infants in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) area are suffering from acute malnutrition, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the CMC, Ruwan Wijayamuni says.

Dr. Wijayamuni said on Tuesday that the pathetic situation had been revealed by a survey conducted in July.

“We measured the weight of 18,948 infants at their birth, and we found a lot of them had acute malnutrition. Most of them are from Colombo North and Colombo Central. On average, around 350,000 children are born every year, but the number dropped to 304,500 in 2022.”

Dr. Wijayamuni said this when the Colombo District Coordination Committee had discussed the issue of malnutrition in the district.
