Colombo MC disregards EC’s directive

The SJB has accused Colombo Municipal Commissioner Bhadrani Jayawardena of inviting top UNP official Sagala Ratnayake to open a newly-built community centre in violation of an Election Commission (EC) directive.

SJB mayoral candidate for CMC Mujibur Rahman asked relevant authorities to prevent the participation of UNP National Organiser Sagala Ratnayake as the Local Government polls had not been officially cancelled.

Rahman yesterday told The Island that the matter was before court.

However, regardless of the EC’s advice, the Municipal Commissioner had gone ahead with the event on Nov 24 evening with Ratnayake as the Chief Guest.

Rahman said that the SJB expected the EC to seek an explanation from the MC official in this regard. (SF)
