The stage is set for the much-anticipated Asian Women Parliamentarian Caucus Annual Meeting – 2023, scheduled to take place in Colombo from tomorrow to Wednesday (Oct 9 to 11). This year’s theme, “Inclusivity & Diversity in Gender Equality in Parliaments in Asia,” promises to bring together prominent figures from the region to address critical issues of gender equality and inclusivity in politics.
Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, along with Chair of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus, Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, and Secretary General of Parliament, Kushani Rohanadeera, would lead the distinguished group of delegates from the Asian Women Parliamentarian Caucus, said a press release from Parliament.
This event is expected to draw government officials from several foreign countries, demonstrating the international significance of the discussions to be held. The annual meeting promises a series of programs designed to foster meaningful dialogues and engagements. One of the highlights includes discussions with the Election Commission, where strategies to enhance gender diversity in political processes will be explored. Additionally, government institutions, non-governmental organizations, and members of civil organizations will participate, contributing their valuable insights and experiences to the discussions.
The Asian Women Parliamentarian Caucus has also arranged several observation tours, providing attendees with the opportunity to witness firsthand the social and political landscapes of Sri Lanka and engage with local communities.
Crucially, this year’s event is a collaborative effort between the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus and the Asian Women Parliamentarian Caucus, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in advancing gender equality and inclusivity in parliamentary systems across Asia.
