CID nabs suspect in C’kachcheri for hacking into US bank accounts and stealing millions

The CID has arrested a person in Chavakachcheri for hacking into bank accounts in the United States.
Police Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana said that the investigators had uncovered that the 41-year-old suspect had hacked into US bank accounts and transferred Rs. 13.4 million to his account in a private bank in Sri Lanka.
DIG Rohana said the suspect’s accomplices were based in the US had aided and abetted him. In return, the suspect had offered a commission to his accomplices.
Since April 20 last year, nearly Rs. 140 million had been transferred fraudulently to local bank account holders, based in the northern and eastern parts of the country.
In the meantime, nearly 30 suspects,who were linked to similar offences were also taken into custody during this period.
The suspect who was apprehended by the CID was to be produced before a court under the provisions of Prevention of Money Laundering Act, the Police Spokesperson said.
Further investigations into the incident were underway, the DIG said.
