Top spokesperson for the Church Rev. Father Cyril Gamini Fernando yesterday (05) said that the people wanted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down.

The public also wanted the rulers to return the ill-gotten wealth to the country.

The priest said so at a street protest launched by the Catholic Church at Borella in support of the ongoing campaign asking the President and the government to quit.

Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, flanked by other priests, marched from the Bishop’s House, Punchi Borella, to Borella demanding the government heed the public call to resign.

The Church has been engaged in a high-profile campaign against the government, demanding justice for 2019 Easter Sunday victims.
