Chung meets EC members, inquires about elections
Soon after UNP General Secretary, former MP Range Bandara said a resolution should be passed by Parliament to put off elections for two years, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie Chung called on the National Election Commission on Tuesday (28).
She engaged in a discussion with officials of the National Election Commission to ensure that elections should be held and to ascertain whether there were any hindrance to holding elections on time, NEC sources said.
NEC Director General R.M.A.L. Rathnayake, during the meeting, assured the Ambassador that the Election Commission was committed to conducting the elections in accordance with the constitutional powers vested in the body, sources said.
Taking to ‘X’, Ambassador Chung said the meeting had taken place to hear about Sri Lanka’s plans for elections and to uphold a transparent process.
“As Sri Lanka, the U.S., and many countries face elections this year, we exchanged views on the importance of voting in free and fair elections as a pillar of democratic governance,” she added.
