China will help Lanka tackle clean water issue – visiting delegate

China would assist Sri Lanka to adopt modern technology on drinking water supply in Sri Lanka, improving the quality of ground water and streamlining waste water management, Deputy Chairman of Chinese Government’s International Development Affairs Deng Boging said during a recent visit to China –Sri Lanka Water Research Institute.

Boging is here on the invitation of the government of Sri Lanka. He also said that China is ready to help China –Sri Lanka Water Research Institute in its research by providing expertise and equipment.He added that China is deeply concerned about the spread of renal ailments in several agricultural areas of Sri Lanka.

“China as a country with long standing friendly relations with Sri Lanka founded a hospital in Polonnaruwa complete with all facilities to provide treatment for renal ailments. As a preventive measure, the China –Sri Lanka Water Research Institute, a joint venture of Chinese and Sri Lankan experts, was established to conduct research on the condition of ground water. It is commendable that the Institute has been fulfilling its mission to our utter satisfaction,” he said.

China is committed to developing the institute and steps would be taken to procure necessary facilities from the Western countries if required.

“The Chinese delegates also discussed future plans for the next several years. They said steps would be taken to develop the Research Institute as Asia’s Higher Education Water Research Institute,” Mahendra Harischandra, Media Coordinator, China- Sri Lanka Water Research Institute said in a press release.

Vice Chairman of Peredeniya University Prof. M.D.Lamahewa, Addl. Secretary to the Ministry of Water Supply M.Nafeel, Head of the China- Sri Lanka Water Research Institute Dr, S.K.Weragoda, and several scholars were present at the occasion.
