The fifth batch of China’s food assistance under its 500 million RMB emergency humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka, 1000 tonnes of rice, arrived in Colombo last Sunday (24).

The Chinese Embassy in Colombo said that so far a total of 4,000 tonnes of rice has been delivered to Colombo. The Chinese donation would support the School Meal Programme to provide daily nutritious meals to the 1.1 million children in 7,900 schools across Sri Lanka for at least six months, an Embassy spokesperson said.

The official said: “China and Sri Lanka are good neighbours looking out for each other, good friends with trust and respect. Against the backdrop of challenges and difficulties Sri Lanka is facing, China will, as always, continue to support Sri Lanka’s social and economic development, within its capacity.”
