Chathurya Nilaweera of Stafford International School is set to meet top seed Thehan Wijemanne of Royal College in the men’s singles tennis final of the 106th Colombo Championships today after they won their respective semi-final matches at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts.
Both Nilaweera and Wijemanne could not proceed to the final at the 2020 edition of this championship. While Nilaweera was edged out by Wijemanne in the quarter-finals the latter suffered defeat at the hands of Vibuda Wijebandara in the semis.
Yesterday both cleared their final hurdles with straight sets wins.
Nilaweera beat Meshal Sinnen 4-2, 4-1 in the quarter-final before registering 6-1, 6-2 win against last year finalist Vibuda Wijebandara in his semi-final yesterday.
In the second semi-final Wijemanne beat Archana Lokuge 6-2, 6-2. His quarter-final victory was against Kiran Vairavanathan.
In the women’s singles final, Anjalika Kurera will meet the winner of the match between Savini Jayasuriya and Neyara Weerawansa. She will know her opponent today after the top semi-final was interrupted by rain yesterday.
Weerawansa won the first set 6-1 and was also leading the tiebreaker 5-1 before rain interruption forced the remainder to be played today.
Kurera was the winner of her semi-final against Tuvini de Alwis. The Ave Maria Convent, Negombo player recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win against de Alwis.
