Central Bank salary issue
I refer to Thursday’s The Island editorial on the Central Bank salary issue. The reality is that most government institutions are overstaffed that it is not possible to increase individual salaries. If government departments can reduce their numbers, salaries cn be increased. My impression is that the Central Bank is not overstaffed.
What’ necessary in the current context is not to look at individual salaries but focus on the total salary bill of the institution. One feasible comparison is with the salary bill of the headquarters staff of the Bank of Ceylon and the People’s Bank. There could be other comparable institutions too.
If we can have these figures, the public can make a reasonable judgment on this issue.
