The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) engineers were averse to the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources because they could not earn commissions out of it, President Ranil Wickremesinghe told Parliament on Tuesday.

The President said that the CEB engineers promoted thermal power generation because they could earn huge commissions from them.

The CEB engineers therefore wanted the country to rely on oil and coal imports to generate electricity power, the President said.

He said so in response to a series of questions raised by JVP-led NPP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake during the committee stage debate on Budget 2024 under the expenditure heads of the Ministry of Technology and Investment Promotion.
