Cardinal asks whose Independence was celebrated yesterday

Colombo Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday asked whose Independence the Sri Lankan rulers were celebrating while the nation was suffering.The Cardinal said, at a special mass at the All Saints’ Church in Borella, that time had come to get rid of oppressive leaders and find a new leadership to this country.

“Whose independence are our rulers celebrating today? Is it their Independence or is it people’s independence? Ours is a beautiful country which is unfortunately engulfed by crises.”

The country had to be freed from the clutches of oppressive leaders, the Cardinal said.
