Call for submissions on national policy on Archives and Records Management

The Department of National Archives has called for submissions on draft policy on Archives and Records Management. A senior spokesperson said that this was in line with their commitment to preserving the rich tapestry of our history. “We invite stakeholders, experts, and the public at large to contribute their valuable insights and recommendations to shape this essential policy,” the official said.

The Sri Lanka National Archives is the official repository for archives of public authorities and significant private collections. It safeguards and preserves records of enduring value related to Sri Lanka’s administrative, legal, and cultural heritage dating back almost 400 years.

The following is the text of statement issued by the department: “The National Policy on Archives and Records Management aims to provide direction and an appropriate framework for action that will inform and shape the management, preservation, and accessibility of our nation’s archival records. It recognises the significance of safeguarding our collective memory and embracing technological advancements to ensure that future generations can access and learn from our shared history.

Key areas of focus would be ?  Access and Preservation: Striking the delicate balance between providing public access to archives and records, safeguarding sensitive information, and ensuring the longevity of material in all formats. ? Digital Records Management: Developing strategies and adopting technologies to manage and preserve digital records and assets effectively. ? Collaboration and Partnerships: Fostering cooperation with relevant institutions and stakeholders to enhance archives management practices.

The success of this policy relies on the collective knowledge of our diverse communities. Therefore, we encourage researchers, archivists, records managers, and all citizens interested in and/or impacted by record-keeping practices in the public and private sectors to participate in this unique opportunity to shape the future of archives and records management in our country.”

The statement quoted Director General National Archives Dr. Nadeera Rupesinghe as having said: “Public participation is essential to ensure that the National Policy on Archives and Records Management reflects the evolving needs of our society,” “We value the knowledge and expertise of all stakeholders and are eager to receive their valuable feedback.”

How to Participate: To contribute to the shaping of this vital policy, all interested parties can download the draft policy and submit comments through an online form available on our official website www.archives.gov.lk from 22.07.2023 onwards. Or, a hard copy can be obtained by visiting our head office in Colombo or the branch office in Kandy. The submission period will remain open until 07.08.2023 and will be followed by public hearings for which those who provided submissions will be selected for participation.

The National Archives assures the public that all submissions will be reviewed during the policy formulation process.
