Cabinet nod for QR code payment system at expressway toll gates
Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando said yesterday that the Cabinet of ministers had given the go-ahead for a QR code payment system at toll gates of expressways in a bid to reduce cash payments in the country.
“The government has joined hands with all licensed financial institutions to encourage the LankaQR payment method to minimise the use of cash within the country. As one of its initiatives, it has been proposed to introduce LankaQR method for manual paying counters in the expressways managed by the Road Development Authority (RDA),” the Minister said.
He said drivers could scan a QR code through a LANKAQR mobile payment app at the toll gate by indicating the relevant amount on their mobile phone. “This will take a maximum of 10 seconds to process the payment and reduce the congestion at toll gates,” the Minister said.
