Cabinet gives green light to establish a wind power station on Mannar island

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal made by the Minister of Power and Energy to establish a wind power station on Mannar Island on a build, own and operate (BOO) basis with private sector investors selected on a competitive basis with an operational period of 20 years.

Initially the Cabinet of Ministers at a  Cabinet meeting held on 26.10.2020 had approved the implementation of the project to increase the electricity generation by installing 6 additional turbines by spending 47 million US Dollars under Asian Development Bank funds  But the ADB funds cannot be used until the government’s foreign debt restructuring program is implemented
