Cabinet approves appointment of Broadcasting Regulatory Commission for electronic media
The Cabinet of Ministers had approved the creation of a Broadcasting Regulatory Commission for electronic media, cabinet spokesman Bandula Gunawardena told the media yesterday.
Gunawardena said the initiative aimed to ensure proper media practices while safeguarding freedom of expression. He, as the Minister of Mass Media, proposed the regulatory commission during a Cabinet meeting on September 22, 2022.
A sub-committee,led by the Minister of Justice, Prison Affairs, and Constitutional Reforms was tasked with formulating policies for the draft bill.
They’ve since formulated a foundational draft with key provisions for consideration in preparing the final draft bill.
The Cabinet had given the go-ahead to the Legal Draftsman to prepare the draft bill based on these initial provisions, the minister said. (RK)
