The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) yesterday issued an Extraordinary Gazette announcing the maximum retail prices for eggs by weight. This is effective from the same day.

The maximum retail price for a kilogram of white eggs is Rs. 880 while a kilo of brown eggs is to be sold at Rs 920.The CAA has ordered that no manufacturer, producer, supplier, distributor or trader shall sell, supply, expose or offer for sale, display for sale the above items, exceeding the maximum retail price.

All-Island Poultry Farmers’ Association chairman Ajith Gunasekara commended the decision stating that they had made this request some time back.

“This also benefits the bakery industry because they manufacture and price according to weight,” he said.

However, Consumer rights activist Asela Sampath said that the government has not withdrawn the gazette setting a maximum retail price for individual eggs.

“This leads to confusion and leaves many loopholes. If a person buys large eggs, a kiilo will only contain about 16 eggs. An egg comes to about 55 rupees then. How will they price an egg then?” he asked.
