Businesswoman caught attempting to smuggle out Rs. 290 mn worth of gems
Security officers at the BIA in the early hours of yesterday (30) foiled an attempt made by a woman to smuggle out gemstones worth over Rs. 290 million to India.
She was handed over to the Sri Lanka Customs officers at the BIA for investigations.
According to a Customs spokesperson, the smuggler is a businesswoman.
She was taken into custody with gemstones weighing over 2kg and 311g.
The 30-year-old was to board a flight to Chennai, India, at 3.13 a.m., yesterday.
Gemstones were found hidden inside her clothes.
