Bid to suspend Uni admissions: SC rejects students’ petition
The Supreme Court yesterday (23) dismissed without hearing a fundamental rights petition filed by a group of students seeking an interim injunction suspending admission to engineering and science faculties based on recently released Z-score rankings.
The petitions were filed by 42 students who passed the GCE Advanced Level Examination in 2019 under the new syllabus.
The ruling was given by the SC yesterday having examined the petition over a period of three days. The bench comprised Justices Buweneka Aluvihare, S. Thurairaja and Yasantha Kodagoda.
Chairman of the bench Justice Aluvihare announced that the decision to reject the petition was taken by the majority of justices.
The GCE A/L examination was held under two syllabi––new and old––in 2019, and some students have complained that the manner in which the Z-score ranking have been prepared has placed them at a disadvantage.
