India’s women’s cricketers will now earn a match fee at par with the men’s cricketers, BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced on Thursday. This welcome decision by the BCCI means that the women’s players will now earn INR 15 lakh for every Test, INR 6 lakh for every ODI and INR 3 lakh for every T20I they play, making them the third board after Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket to have equal pay. However, a massive disparity in the central contract pay of the men and women cricketers remains

Jay Shah, in a couple of Tweets, said that the BCCI has taken the “first step towards tackling discrimination” by implementing the pay equity policy and that cricket in India is now moving towards a “new era of gender equality”.

Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian women’s captain, hailed the decision and said, “Truly a red letter day for Women’s Cricket in India with pay parity announced for women and men.
