BCB to raise controversial umpiring issue in ‘proper forum’

Bangladesh Cricket Board have said on Thursday that they will raise the controversial umpiring issue during the national team’s T20 World Cup 2022 clash against India in the proper forum as the umpires did not pay any heed to it during the game. Bangladesh wicket keeper batsman Nurul Hasan has accused Virat Kohli of fake fielding after the game

Bangladesh have said that the umpires Marais Erasmus and Chris Brown failed to notice the incident that took place in the seventh over of the Bangladesh chase, when the former India captain feigned as if he were relaying an Arshdeep Singh throw from the deep. Neither the umpires nor did the two batters – Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto – out in the middle spot it. Jalal Yunus, BCB’s cricket operation chairman, told reporters on Thursday that their skipper informed Erasmus about the fake fielding incident but the standing umpire paid no heed.

“We have spoken about it. You have seen it on TV and everything happened in front of you. We have notified the umpires about the fake throw but they said that they did not notice it and that is the reason they did not take the review. Shakib discussed a lot about it with Erasmus and even spoke with him after game,” Jalal said.

Law 41.5, pertaining to unfair play, prohibits the “deliberate distraction, deception or obstruction of the batter”, and if an incident is deemed to be a breach, the umpire can declare that particular delivery as a dead ball, and award the batting side five runs.

Bangladesh were also seemingly peeved by having to resume their chase almost immediately after a heavy spell of rain had left the ground sodden. Shakib was pictured running his hand through the grass while the umpires spoke to the two captains about the playing conditions in the curtailed game. Jalal said the umpires did not pay any attention to Bangladesh’s request to resume a bit later.
