Ban on single-use plastic products effective
The ban on manufacture and sale of single-use plastic products has come into effect since (Oct 1), the Central Environment Authority (CEA) says.The manufacture and sale of single-use plastic straws, stirrers, cups, plates, knives, forks and spoons, string hopper trays and garlands will be prohibited.
In February this year, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal by the Environmental Minister for a ban on several plastic products in the country. The proposal sought to stop the production, importation, sale and use of some plastic products, effective from 01 June, 2023.
On August 30, 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers took into consideration a proposal for a ban on seven single-use plastic polythene and plastic products in the country. Subsequently, a committee of experts was appointed to look into the matter and to submit a report containing necessary recommendations.CEA chairman Supun S. Pathirage said legal action would be taken against the violators in terms of the provisions of the National Environmental Act.
