Asitha Wanninayake produced good all round performances as St. Anthony’s, Katugastota secured the runners up position in group ‘X’ with a win over St. Sebastian’s in the Under 19 Division I Tier ‘A’ cricket tournament on Wednesday.

Wanninayake top scored with 42 runs and took four wickets for 36 runs to restrict the home team to 176 runs. That was the fourth win registered by the team from Katugastota and they are through to the knock out stage by virtue of their runner up position in the group.

While St. Anthony’s finished second behind St. Joseph’s to advance from Group ‘X’, De Mazenod secured the quarter-final berth from Group ‘Z’ when they beat Prince of Wales by two wickets and ended up as the runners up to Mahanama. Ruveen Fonseka (43), Lester Jayaweera (41) and Salindu Pathirana (39) made vital contributions with the bat to reach a target of 208 runs with many overs to spare. It was De Mazenod’s third win.

Mahanama were already the champions in their group when they encountered Maliyadeva yesterday. Devindu Kekirideniya and Inuka Karannagoda shared seven wickets between them to ensure that they complete the group stage unbeaten. The duo restricted Maliyadeva to 195 runs before their reliable batting line up helped them reach the win need for the loss of six wickets.

Meanwhile, in Tier ‘B’ St. Sylvester’s rocked their group with a six wicket victory over St. Aloysius’ at Lake View where a quick fire 63 runs by Maleesha Silva was the highlight. Silva cracked an unbeaten 63 runs inclusive of five fours and five sixes for them to reach a target of 153 runs with many overs to spare. The victory has elevated them to the second position temporarily. Thurstan, who are the leading team in group (Z) and the third placed team Ananda, who also have three wins against their names will have an opportunity to earn more points as they have one match remaining.

In the other matches played yesterday, Lumbini, Wesley and Trinity registered victories.
