Aquarius era …comes to an end

I know for sure the news I have for you, this week, is going to saddened lots of music lovers, especially those who fancy the group Aquarius.

Yes, the group is no more, and the possibilities of a new-look Aquarius, showing up at a later date, seems very unlikely.

Over the years, since Aquarius first came into being, decades ago, they have had breaks, from the showbiz setup, but this time it’s all over, says bassist Benjy Ranabahu.

First the pandemic, then the lockdown, and then the present situation in the country, have been the contributory factors for Benjy’s decision to call it quits where Aquarius is concerned.

As leader of Aquarius, Benjy was always looking for something new to offer music lovers, and he believes in the saying ‘practice makes perfect.’

Although they did experience difficulties, over the past few years, the band did exceedingly well, in the scene…until the fuel and power crisis disrupted their regular practice dates.

Recollecting the past, Benjy said the band’s first overseas assignment was in Germany, and then they moved to the Middle East for a lengthy contract, in both Dubai, and Doha.

In Doha, they had four female singers, from the Philippines, doing the needful for them.

Quite a few of our recognized female vocalists have been featured with Aquarius, on a regular basis – Sureshni, Ginger, Judy, Merlina (now performing in the Maldives), Brenda, Ruwini (now in the States), April, and Wathsala.

Sheru, from the Maldives, was also very much a part of Aquarius.

Benjy, however, hasn’t given up music and will be seen in action, again, before long!

He says there is something exciting coming up!

His original plan to go abroad, for a short break, has been shelved, as he is now enthusiastically practicing.
