Applications for postal voting accepted from January 05 to 23

Applications for postal voting, from eligible voters, for the 2023 Local Government elections, will be accepted from January 05 to 23 midnight, an election official said yesterday.

Election Commission Chairman Nimal Punchihewa earlier told journalists in Colombo that nominations from candidates wishing to contest the Local Government election would be accepted from January 18 to January 21 noon.

He said accepting election deposits from candidates will begin on January 04 and continue until January 20 noon.

Elections will be held for 340 local government bodies in 14,000 polling centres established countrywide, Punchihewa said.

Earlier this week, a writ petition was filed before the Supreme Court by a retired military official seeking an order suspending the elections citing Sri Lanka’s economic crisis.
