KANDY –

Kandy District Secretary Chandana Tennakoon yesterday disclosed at Minipe that Kandy District was self-sufficient in compost fertiliser.

Addressing a group of officials and representatives of farmers’ organisations of Minipe, Tennakoon said that the production of compost fertiliser in the Kandy district had exceeded the required amount for cultivation of paddy in the Maha season

Tennakoon said that the requirement was 10,676 metric tonnes of compost fertiliser, but by now the production had increased to 23,332 metric tonnes in the district.

Fertiliser was produced by farmer organisations and other organisations like the Pradeshiya Sabhas and the Kundasale Pradeshiya Sabha, he said.

Agrarian Services Centres in the district had also produced 100 metric tonnes each. Hence there should be no fear of any shortage of carbonic fertiliser, the Kandy District Secretary added

It was also disclosed at the meeting that 19,735 acres of wet land in Minipe would be cultivated with paddy this Maha season. At least 15,000 families would join the cultivation.

A decision was taken to release water for paddy cultivation from the Minipe canal from 25 October, beginning the third and fourth stages.

Matale District Secretary S. M. P. K. Perera, Kandy Additional District Secretary Lalith Etampawala, Minipe Divisional Secretary Nuwan Hemakumara and Kandy District Deputy Agrarian Services Commissioner Tharanga Jayasekara were present. The meeting was held at the Cultural Centre of Hasalaka.
