Alternative to lunch sheets?
Minister Udaya Gammanpila, addressing the media at the weekly Cabinet meeting, said that alternative products to plastic will be introduced, after banning plastics from January 2021.
People think this is akin to “putting the cart before the horse.” There are thousands of workers and students who bring lunch and breakfast packets from home due to fear of Corona and other cleanliness issues, not forgetting the cost factor of meals in restaurants. Banana leaves are not a solution as they are dwindling. First find an alternative product to lunch sheets, to cater to the needs of thousands of workers/students who use lunch sheets daily, and then go for the total ban of this product. This would be a prudent step, than banning plastic lunch sheets first and finding an alternative later.
Even previous “Randu Palanaya ” tried this ban, but it became a damp squib. So don’t be a second failure! Can the GR administration work in a slip-shod manner like the previous regime, to please some section of society.
