Garbage dumping in Muthurajawela:
By Chitra Weerarathne
Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardene yesterday informed the Court of Appeal that the Central Environmental Authority had undertaken to demarcate the western and the southern boundaries of the Muthurajawela, Wildlife Sanctuary.
The President’s Counsel also explained that the Director General Wildlife would demarcate the boundaries of block 1 and 2 of the southern areas within six months. Assistance of the Surveyor General and the Inspector General of Police were needed for it, he added.
The ASG appeared for the Attorney General, when the petition filed by the Centre for Environmental justice, was called before the Court. The petition has said that the dumping of garbage in the sanctuary, will harm fauna and flora in the marsh. Counsel Shamil Perera, who appeared for Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith Joseph who is a respondent in the petition, said that the Cardinal would cooperate with other parties to preserve the ecologically sensitive area.
Counsel Ravindranath Dabare appeared for the petitioner, the Centre for Environmental Justice. All the parties agreed to the solution put forward by the Additional Solicitor General. The bench comprised Justice Sobitha Rajakaruna and Justice Dhammika Ganepola. The case will be next called on September 8.
