All Island Scrabble Championship 2022

The All Island Scrabble Championship was held on Nov 19-20 at Sasakawa Hall, Colombo 03. The Chief Guest of the Tournament was Prof. G.L. Peiris, MP. The Sri Lanka Scrabble League organized the tournament after a period three years due to the pandemic, and the tournament had a very high turnout, with more than 100 participants from across the country.

A press release from the League said: This time, the tournament was unique as it was rated by the ‘World English Scrabble Players Association – WESPA’. Lakshan Wanniarachchi clinched the Open Championship, and Shaila Amalean emerged as the “Best Senior Citizen’. Adheesha Dissanayake bagged the ‘Under 15 Best Player’ title and Hivin Dilmith secured the ‘Under 19 Best Player’ title.

The oldest player to play in this tournament was 88-year-old Sarojini Nagendran and the youngest player was nine year-old Mohamed Inam Irshad. Raashid Sudin, Secretary of the Sri Lanka Scrabble League, was the Tournament Chairperson, and the Tournament Director was Praveeni Jayasekera.
