The Court of Appeal yesterday (13) granted bail to retired Major and Attorney-at-Law Ajith Prasanna, a former member of the Southern Provincial Council.

President’s Counsel Shavindra Fernando told Court that his client had submitted an affidavit to the effect that he would not hold press conferences in future in respect of judges and court procedure.

Prasanna was remanded on January 01, 2020. The procedure adopted in arresting his client was wrong, and not even a complaint had been lodged with the police, Fernando PC told the Court of Appeal.

Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara Tennekoon said that the Attorney General would not object to bail.

The Defence Counsel also said that the pandemic situation and prison congestion should be taken into account. His client needed medical attention, he said.

The Court of Appeal ordered that Ajith Prasanna be produced before the Chief Magistrate of Colombo with two sureties.

The Court of Appeal bench comprised Justice Priyantha Fernando and Justice Devika Abeyratne.
