AG wants FR petition filed by Liberal Youth Movement against Emergency taken up before three-judge bench

Petitioners Rusiru Egodage and Attorney-at-Law Namini Panditha arrive in court

The Fundamental Rights petition filed by the Liberal Youth Movement (LYM) against the Emergency Regulations was taken up for Leave to Proceed and granting of interim relief yesterday before Justices Yasantha Kodagoda and Arjuna Obeysekera.

Dr. Gihan Gunatilake appeared for the petitioners Namini Panditha and Rusiru Egodage, the co-conveners of the LYM, while Rajeev Gunathilaka, Deputy Solicitor General appeared for the respondents.

DSG Gunathilaka moved that the Applications be refixed before a bench of three Judges. Counsel appearing for petitioners in all three cases informed Court that according to provisions of Article 126 of the Constitution and other relevant provisions, Bench of two Judges had the power to hear and determine the Applications and moved that due to the urgency and importance of these matters, they be taken up for Support today.

Considering all facts and circumstances, the court refixed the case along with other two connected Cases for Leave to Proceed and Granting of Interim Relief to 12 August.
