About 83 6 kg of contraband Kendu leaves found in Kalpitiya

The Navy, in two search operations, conducted on 30 April and May Day, recovered approximately 836kgs of smuggled Kendu leaves off Paramunai and Kudawa beach aream in Kalpitiya. The search operations also led to the arrest of two persons, residents of Anawasala, Kalpitiya, aged 18 and 23, along with a dinghy.

The 30 April recovery consists of 17 sacks of Kendu leaves, weighing about 550kilos and 750gms. The second recovery was made several hours later, on 01 May, when troops detected 286kgs and 200gms of smuggled Kendu leaves, in nine sacks on the Kudawa beach.

Navy headquarters said that the suspects, along with contraband, were handed over to the Customs Preventive Office in Katunayake for legal action (SF)
