A Nation, At Last

Published

on

By Lynn Ockersz

They spoke of an ‘Island Nation’,

These long seventy years or more,

But it was only a hazy, undefined notion,

That hovered in fanciful imaginings,

Of the master-writers of spin,

Who conjured-up a land of make-believe,

But now you see it blooming brightly,

Among those massing in huge numbers,

Urging that their Right to Life be respected,

From a master class deaf to persuasion,

And it’s such a many-splendoured thing,

That has within it every group and community,

That’s enriched the Isle’s dazzling tapestry,

From the time it was noticed by cartographers,

So much so, one can now see for herself,

How a nation finally comes into existence –

It’s when a land’s powerless unite as one,

To soldier on for their rights and liberation.
