Gomel State Medical University Belarus strengthens bonds with their partner universities in Sri Lanka
Prof. Igor Stoma graduated from Belarusian State Medical University, Faculty of General Medicine, where he began his Ph.D. program in 2013. At the time, he was working as Assistant Professor and eventually became an Associate Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and visited Sri Lanka last week to strengthen bonds with their partner universities in Sri Lanka.
With the advancement of technology and fast developing ICT landscape many traditional ‘jobs’ are disappearing, but the demand for the medical profession will not reduce and have increased after the COVID-19 pandemic, said Rector (chancellor) Gomel State Medical University Belarus Prof. Igor Stoma who visited Sri Lanka.
He said that he came to Sri Lanka to strengthen bonds with their partner universities in Sri Lanka and to support them. The Rector (Chancellor) and vice-rector visited the University of Peradeniya and Wickramarachchi University of Gampaha during their stay in Sri Lanka.
“We hope to conduct meetings via zoom and other communication methods to look at academic staff exchange programs as well,” he said.
“As the medical profession is evolving, we need to exchange ideas. So I signed two MoUs with Peradeniya and Gampaha Wickramarachchi University mainly to share advancements of the medical profession and new technology and education methods with them,” he said.
REC Campus High Level Road, Nugegoda which has directed most of the students to Gomel State Medical University during the past 20 years, and hundreds of Sri Lankan students have now qualified as doctors. “We have around 4,000 students studying in our university from nearly 30 countries and it’s praiseworthy to note that over 200 are from Sri Lanka.”
“We expect to graduate more than 30 Doctors of Medicine Degree (MD) students from Sri Lanka in the next batch and this number is the highest rate among foreign students,” he added.
“Studying in Belarus should be the best choice for both domestic and International students. This is due to the standard and quality of the Education system in Belarus which is of a very high standard, hence every year students from all over the world troop into Belarus for studies in their respective courses of choice,” he noted.
Belarus is among the top ten safest countries in the world and most importantly the entire education is done in English. Today, Gomel State Medical University employs over 600 highly qualified professors and assistant professors.
Gomel State Medical University was founded in 1990 as per a resolution of the Council of Ministers and Order of the Minister of Health and today is recognized by the World Health Organization, ECFMG(USA), GMC(UK), AMC (Australia), SLMC (Sri Lanka), India, China, and EU/EEA.
