82 Students from University of Jaffna receive Chinese scholarship

Ambassador of China to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong recently welcomed Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna and handed over Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship of LKR 4.3 million to 82 students from the university. The scholarship, with 5000 rupees per month per person, will help to support these students from underprivileged families for an academic year.

Ambassador Qi recalled the 1.6 million doses of Sinopharm vaccines donated by China to Northern and Eastern Provinces, and his last visit to the north in December 2021, during which he gifted water purification plants to 5 districts, food packs and fishing gears to 2,000 local needy families etc.

The Chinese envoy emphasized that China-Sri Lanka friendship are also deeply rooted in the northern districts and have benefited the northern people as well. Prof. Srisatkunarajah thanked China for the grant to University of Jaffna and the 1.6 million doses vaccines donation from which himself is a beneficiary.

The Vice Chancellor spoke highly about the historic links between Tamil and Chinese people, and the academic exchanges and cooperation between the universities in both countries. So far, 7 academic staff in the University of Jaffna got their doctorates from Chinese universities.
