44% increase in Lankan workers employed in South Korea

The number of Sri Lankan workers departing for South Korea so far this year has surpassed 5,000, which is 44 percent growth compared to the previous year, Minister of Labor and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara, said on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

He said that it shows the country’s commitment to enhancing employment prospects.

The Director of the Korean Human Resources Department based in Sri Lanka this April agreed to provide 8,000 job opportunities for Sri Lankans in South Korea in 2023.

Workers’ remittance in August 2023 was over USD499 million and cumulative figure for January – August 2023 was around USD3.9, a 74.4 percent increase compared with the same period in 2022, according to official data.

Worker remittances is one of main sources of foreign revenue for Sri Lanka.
