398 suspects arrested so far over violence

Altogether 398 persons had been arrested up to yesterday over the incidents at Galle Face, opposite Temple Trees and attacks on persons, causing damage to public and private property, etc., across the country, police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa, said.

The SSP said that identities of over one thousand persons, involved in those violent activities, and crimes, had been established.

SSP Thalduwa said that of those 398 persons arrested, 101 had been released on bail by courts. A total of 159 had been remanded.

He said the suspects had been arrested on various charges since May 9.

The SSP said that as at 6 am yesterday, 756 complaints had been received by the Police regarding incidents of violence and unrest that took place all over the country.

Investigations were being carried out under the direct supervision of the Senior DIG and DIGs in charge of the respective provinces, as well as the officers in charge of the divisions, he said.
