A project launched in 2010 to construct a sewage treatment plant and the sanitation facilities in Kandy have been completed. Sri Lanka received a Yen loan of approximately 14 bn for the project. Now, door-to-door connections to each household are underway.

Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka Mizukoshi Hideaki attended the opening ceremony of the “Kandy City Wastewater Management Project” on 17th November 2021.

The ceremony was held online between Temple Trees and the newly constructed Gannoruwa Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kandy and was attended by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of Water Supply Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Governor of the Central Province Lalith Gamage and other Sri Lankan officials.

Japan has been supporting the water sector in the Kandy region since 2001 by building water supply facilities, including a water purification plant, and improving the drinking water coverage rate.

Ambassador Hideaki stated that “the project assistance would indeed imply the beautiful merger of Sri Lankan tradition and Japanese technology, which stands as a great symbol of our historically close bilateral relations, as we prepare to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year”.
