Over 100 lawmakers skip vote on Social Security Contribution Levy

Bill passed with a majority of 81 votes

Parliament yesterday ratified the Social Security Contribution Levy with amendments.The second reading of the Bill was approved by a majority of 81 votes with 91 members voting for and 10 against.MPs Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Dilan Perera, three NPP MPs led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake and three SJB MPs including Ajith Mannaperuma, Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella and Ashok Abeysinghe voted against the Bill.

Others SJB MPs including Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa were absent during the time of voting.The total number of MPs who were absent during the second reading vote was 123.The third reading of the vote was approved without a vote. The government expected to collect Rs 140 bn annually with the help of the new levy.
